The Thriving Wellness Center ADHD Coaching & Therapy for Teens program helps teens and adolescents achieve their goals by strengthening your executive functioning skills. Impairments in executive functioning skills contribute to troubles like starting and finishing tasks, handling frustrations, organizing, staying on track, and prioritizing tasks.
Having ADHD impacts teenagers in many ways including:
Struggling in school and this is not because people with ADHD are not smart! ADHD makes it difficult to focus on tests or organize homework, especially as classes get harder. In fact, without support, teenagers with ADHD tend to have lower grade point averages and scores on standardized achievement tests, and higher rates of school failure and suspension for problem behavior.
Problems with impulsive or addictive behaviors including cell phone usage, video game addiction, and increased substance abuse. Research shows that teenagers with ADHD tend to start using cigarettes, alcohol and illicit drugs earlier than typical kids. Later, they tend to have higher rates substance use and alcohol-related problems.
Issues with friendships and relationships including problems with communicating, maintaining friendships or doing or saying things without thinking. About half of adolescents with ADHD haveserious problems with peer relationships. Research shows that they tend to have fewer reciprocal friendships, and are more likely to be ignored or rejected by peers. They’re also more likely to be the victim of bullying, or to bully others.
Difficulties managing emotions or calming themselves down. The teenage years tend to be an emotional rollercoaster for all kids, but those with ADHD are prone to poor emotion-regulation, which may result in greater highs and lows. Their emotional impulsivity can make it especially difficult for them to cope with frustration. It can be tough on them, and those around them.
